Orange Avenue shuts to traffic and the drumlines take over. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Downtown Orlando Parade has run for more than four decades, moving south from the Orange County Courthouse toward Lake Eola Park while families line the sidewalks. The line of march mixes dance troupes, school and church groups, community organizations, comedy and music, with an antique fire engine or two. Each edition carries its own theme. The Southwest Orlando Jaycees produce the parade, and organizations that want to march sign up with them in advance. The Orlando Mayor's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission builds a wider run of city events around it: a City Hall vigil, a march, a commemorative luncheon and a day of service. The parade falls on the Saturday of King holiday weekend and is free to watch. Step-off has been 10 a.m. at Orange Avenue and Livingston Street, and the route takes about two hours to reach Lake Eola.
