Orange Avenue shuts to traffic and downtown Orlando hands the street over to drumlines. This parade has run for more than four decades, and it is the biggest public gathering of the metro's King holiday week: dance troupes, school and church groups, community organizations, comedy, music and an antique fire engine or two moving south from the Orange County Courthouse toward Lake Eola Park while families line the sidewalks. The Southwest Orlando Jaycees produce it, and the Orlando Mayor's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission wraps a wider run of city events around it, including a City Hall vigil and march, a commemorative luncheon and a day of service. Each edition carries its own theme. Know before you go: the parade falls on the Saturday of King holiday weekend and is free to watch. Step-off has been 10 a.m. at Orange Avenue and Livingston Street, with the route taking about two hours to reach Lake Eola. Organizations wanting to march sign up in advance through the Jaycees.
