New Orleans Greek Festival
1200 Allen Toussaint Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70122
About this happenin
Holy Trinity Cathedral and its ministries hold the New Orleans Greek Festival, a three-day fundraiser on the cathedral grounds at 1200 Allen Toussaint Boulevard along Bayou St. John. It has been a Memorial Day weekend tradition since 1973 and draws about 20,000 visitors. Parish cooks turn out roasted leg of lamb with orzo, gyros, souvlaki, pastitsio and a goat burger, with Greek wine and Mythos beer to go alongside. The Pastry Shoppe sells baklava and other homemade sweets by the piece or boxed to carry out, and a Greek grocery sets up inside the Hellenic Cultural Center. Hellenic Dancers perform in costume on the indoor stage several times a day, and live Greek music plays outside. Guided cathedral tours include Byzantine chant. Children get a playground by the bayou, and a Saturday morning walk/run lets its participants in an hour before the gates open. Tickets are sold at tickets.gfno.com. Parking is free at the former JFK school site on Wisner Boulevard, with shuttle buses running through the festival hours.
