About this happenin

The Jollof Cook-Off is the main event at Taste of AfriKin, an African and Caribbean food festival at Maison AfriKin, inside the Scott Galvin Community Center at 1600 NE 126th Street in North Miami. Cooks from West Africa argue over whose jollof rice is best, and the crowd gets a vote. The AfriKin Foundation, a nonprofit, presents the festival with the City of North Miami, and it has been held on Labor Day weekend since 2024. Doors open at 5:30 pm and the program runs from 6 to 9. It is indoors and open to all ages, with free parking on site. The ticket covers unlimited tastings and cocktails. Prices step up in tiers as the date nears, and sales are final. AfriKin's page says it sells out, so buy early. Around the cook-off, kitchens from across Africa and the Caribbean serve tastings all evening, with live music and cultural performances. The art exhibition at Maison AfriKin stays open, and a vendor village sells crafts and fashion.
