Life Time's Miami Marathon and Half finishes at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami, after 26.2 miles or 13.1 on one flat, USATF-certified loop. The course covers Downtown, Brickell, Miami Beach and Coconut Grove, with stretches on the MacArthur and Rickenbacker causeways where Biscayne Bay sits right beside the road. It began in 2003 with about 3,400 runners, after Frankie Ruiz, an FIU graduate, and the county and city mayors noticed that Miami had no marathon. A group of runners called Streakers has run it every year since. The race starts at 6 a.m. Entry is capped, so register early. The Tropical 5K runs the day before, and the two-day expo where runners pick up bibs is free and open to anyone. Watching costs nothing: bleachers just south of the finish line are first come, first served, and cheer stations line the course from about mile 5 to mile 20. Roads in Downtown and Brickell close at 5 a.m.
