Florida's busiest beach has Art Deco lifeguard towers painted candy colors, and the Atlantic comes in warm. The people-watching on Ocean Drive, a block back from the sand, is as…

Several of the South Beach hotels, among them the Clevelander, Hotel Victor and the Cardozo, are on the closed stretch of Ocean Drive itself. Hotel Victor dates to 1936, and this guide to the Art Deco hotels of South Beach finds nearly all of them valet-only, with the fees priced.
Ocean Drive in South Beach shuts to cars for three days every January, from 5th Street up to 14th Place, and Art Deco Weekend spreads into Lummus Park. The Miami Design Preservation League has put it on since 1977, when the league was a grassroots push to protect the neighborhood's 1930s buildings. It is now the league's largest educational outreach program, with more than 50,000 visitors a year by its count. Along the street there is an artisan market, a classic car show, a kids' zone, a chess table and sketchwalks with Urban Sketchers. Getting in is free, but the guided architectural tours cost extra (they have run $40), and the proceeds go to the league's preservation work. Lectures at the Wolfsonian-FIU carried a ticket of $10 to $15. In the park, live jazz plays on the Jazz Age Stage, and swing dance lessons run there between band sets.
