More than half of the world's active geysers, about 500 of them, are in Yellowstone, where Wyoming meets Montana and Idaho. At least 150 are in one square mile of the Upper Geyser Basin, including Old Faithful, which has never kept an hourly schedule. Rangers predict each eruption to within 10 minutes either way. A boardwalk in Midway Geyser Basin passes Grand Prismatic Spring, and a side hike off the southern Fairy Falls trail leads to an overlook above its bands of blue through orange. Most roads close to cars in early November. The one from Gardiner through Mammoth Hot Springs and the Lamar Valley to Cooke City stays open all winter, and from mid-December snowcoaches and snowmobiles run to Old Faithful.
