A glacier carved this 256-foot-deep lake at the foot of Cascade Canyon about 12,000 years ago, and the Teton Range still rises straight off its far shore: Teewinot, Mount St. John, and the Grand itself crowding the water. Take the shuttle boat across instead of walking the 7.1-mile loop and you cut straight to the Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point trail, where the canyon opens up behind you. It is the most photographed view in Grand Teton for a reason, and the parking lots off Teton Park Road fill early, so come at first light when the peaks are mirrored and the crowds are still asleep.

One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks, Myakka spreads 37,000 acres of wetlands, prairies, and hammocks along the slow Myakka River east of Sarasota. Climb the canopy walkway, the first public treetop trail in North America, suspended 25 feet up with a tower above the oaks, then board one of the giant airboats for an alligator-lined cruise on Upper Myakka Lake. Winter brings cooler air and crowds of wading birds.
