Chimney Rock is a 315-foot gneiss spire standing over Hickory Nut Gorge, reached by an elevator blasted up through the cliff or a stairway of 499 steps to the flag at the top. From the summit the view runs 75 miles down the gorge to Lake Lure and across layer after layer of blue-hazed Blue Ridge peaks. A trail along the cliff base leads to 404-foot Hickory Nut Falls, the cascade where the final scenes of The Last of the Mohicans were filmed.
