One of the most photographed waterfalls on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Falls tumbles in dramatic tiers into the rugged depths of Linville Gorge, often called the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians. From the visitor center near Milepost 316, well-maintained trails fan out to a series of overlooks, each framing the cascade and the gorge from a different angle. It is an easy stop for casual walkers yet rewarding enough for serious hikers who descend toward the plunge basin below.

One of Florida's oldest and largest state parks, Myakka spreads 37,000 acres of wetlands, prairies, and hammocks along the slow Myakka River east of Sarasota. Climb the canopy walkway, the first public treetop trail in North America, suspended 25 feet up with a tower above the oaks, then board one of the giant airboats for an alligator-lined cruise on Upper Myakka Lake. Winter brings cooler air and crowds of wading birds.
