Fall color comes to Asheville, North Carolina, from the top down. It starts on the highest peaks in late September and takes six weeks to reach the valleys. Heading north from town on the Blue Ridge Parkway, you pass Craggy Gardens at Milepost 364 on the way to Mount Mitchell State Park, whose 6,684-foot summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. Asheville is the last place to buy gas before the park. Hundreds of artists work in the old warehouses of the River Arts District, which Hurricane Helene flooded in 2024.
