Lanikai is a small beach in a residential part of Kailua, on Oahu, with shallow, usually calm water and the two Mokulua islets offshore. Parking on the neighborhood streets is difficult, so leave the car at Kailua Beach Park and walk less than half a mile of flat paved road, or take the loop bus. Come onto the sand at Mokumanu Drive, where it bulges out wide; the western end has eroded back to a seawall. Lanikai has no lifeguard, and the closest stand is on the Lanikai side of Kailua Beach Park. The Mokuluas are a state seabird sanctuary where wedge-tailed shearwaters nest, so visitors have to stay below the high-water mark, and the islets close at sunset.
