At sunset every evening a Sheraton Maui diver lights torches along Pu'u Keka'a, the Black Rock at the north end of Ka'anapali Beach in West Maui, and jumps. The resort has kept the ceremony since it opened in 1963, in honor of Kahekili, the Maui chief who ruled from about 1766 to 1793 and reportedly leapt from 300 to 400 feet. Five hotels and six condominium villages face the beach, and the free Ka'anapali Trolley stops at Whalers Village and the Sheraton between 10 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Strong currents along the shore set up rip currents, and the state warns that long calm spells can end in brief sets of large waves.
