Any car entering Haleakala National Park's Summit District on Maui from 3 to 7 a.m. needs a sunrise reservation, and none are issued at the gate. Book on Recreation.gov up to 60 days ahead, or try again 48 hours before, when part of each day's reservations is released. Sunset and stargazing need none. Before dawn the summit is regularly below freezing, and the park sells no food or warm clothes, so bring your own and fill the tank in Pukalani, the last gas on the way up. The bamboo forest and 400-foot Waimoku Falls are on the Pipiwai Trail in the Kipahulu District, a separate drive 12 miles past Hana, where the Pools of Oheo are closed to swimming.
