About

The Iron Hill loop at Red Top Mountain State Park, near Acworth, follows Lake Allatoona for 3.9 miles of gravel through a former 1800s iron mining community. The paved Lakeside Trail is a 0.75-mile ADA-accessible loop past the 1869 Vaughan cabin, where the park now and then holds iron pours. The park also manages Allatoona Pass Battlefield, a free stop at I-75 Exit 283, where more than 5,000 men fought on October 5, 1864. About 30 percent of them became casualties.
