The first gold on the Georgia State Capitol's dome was donated by Dahlonega and Lumpkin County, and in 1958 mule-drawn wagons hauled 43 ounces of it to Atlanta. The building is open 8 to 5 on weekdays, except state holidays, and guided tours take walk-ins. Leave pocket knives in the car, because everyone goes through a metal detector and security can't hold them. From January until the General Assembly adjourns, usually in late March, you can watch the House and Senate from public galleries off the fourth floor. The museum shares that floor. Its best-known piece is a two-headed cow.
