The dome that gives Georgia politics its nickname is real gold leaf, hammered from Dahlonega ore mined an hour north where America had its first gold rush in the 1830s. Finished in 1889 and capped by the statue Miss Freedom, the building doubles as a free state museum, with flags, portraits, and a fourth-floor collection of Georgia minerals and Civil War relics open on weekdays. Walk the marble rotunda beneath the gilded dome, then step out onto Capitol Square where the working seat of state government meets a century-old monument.

The upper floor widens the lens from the American civil rights movement to human rights struggles still unfolding around the world.
