About

Margaret Mitchell wrote most of Gone with the Wind in a two-room ground-floor apartment at 10th and Peachtree in Midtown Atlanta, and called it "the Dump." She started with the last chapter and kept nearly seventy chapters stuffed in manila envelopes. A 1994 fire destroyed much of the upper floors and the roof. Her apartment survived, and it has been restored to look as it did while she lived there. The house is open Tuesday through Sunday, with free parking on site and a free audio tour in the Bloomberg Connects app. The Atlanta History Center's exhibition inside covers her research and the myths about slavery and the Civil War that the book and the 1939 film helped spread.
