Carters Lake, an Army Corps reservoir near Chatsworth about 70 miles north of Atlanta, has 62 miles of undeveloped shoreline and one business, the marina. Steep banks limit fishing from shore. Bring a boat for the striped bass and walleye, or rent a pontoon at the marina from May through September. Damsite, the busiest of the six ramps, takes cards only at its day-use machine and can close on peak-season days when the lot fills. Woodring Campground has a swimming area and the 3.5-mile Amadahy Trail, an easy loop with lake views.
