Lassen Peak, about 130 miles north of Sacramento, threw an ash column more than 30,000 feet high on May 22, 1915. The 30-mile park road runs past the Devastated Area that eruption left, which has a short interpretive trail. Bumpass Hell is usually snowed in until July, and its lot is often full from mid-morning to early afternoon. When it's closed or crowded, the park suggests Sulphur Works instead, a roadside stop a mile from the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. More than 30 feet of snow falls in a year. From about December through May the road is closed to through traffic, though you can still drive to the visitor center and Manzanita Lake.
