WMNF 88.5 FM takes over the Cuban Club in Ybor City for one Saturday night each spring, running bands on stages across the old social club until midnight. Tropical Heatwave is the listener-supported station's annual festival, and it sounds like the station: independent artists, a heavy share of Tampa Bay bands, and a lineup that swings from blues to cumbia to garage rock inside the same hour. Music runs on the open-air patio, in the ground-floor Cantina and up in the ballroom, with the air-conditioned theater open when you need a break. Know before you go: the box office opens at 4:30 pm, gates at 5 pm, and music runs 6 pm to midnight. General admission has recently run around $50 in advance. Food trucks and bars are on site.
