Tampa's Caribbean community has been building its carnival weekend since 2005. Feathered sections from Opulence, Freedom Mas, Walton Premier and other mas bands move through downtown streets behind the music trucks, in sequins and towering headpieces. Then the crowd settles into Perry Harvey Sr. Park for the concert stage and the food village. J'ouvert follows on Sunday morning at River Tower Park, the loose, messy street party that traditionally opens a carnival. The parade and concert are ticketed through Eventbrite, and J'ouvert is sold separately. Saturday usually runs from noon to 10pm, with the concert starting around 5pm. Besides the vending village and Caribbean food stalls, there's a kids zone. Bring sun cover and shoes you can stand in all day, and wear clothes you won't miss to J'ouvert.
