About this happenin
Tampa's Caribbean community has been building this weekend since 2005: a masquerade parade of feathered mas bands, a concert stage and a food village at Perry Harvey Sr. Park downtown. Costumed sections from bands such as Opulence, Freedom Mas and Walton Premier move through the streets in sequins and towering headpieces behind the music trucks, then the crowd settles into the park for the concert. J'ouvert follows on Sunday morning at River Tower Park, the loose, messy street party that traditionally opens a carnival. Know before you go: the parade and concert are ticketed through Eventbrite, and J'ouvert is sold separately. Recent editions have run the Saturday from noon to 10pm, with the concert starting around 5pm. A kids zone, vending village and Caribbean food stalls make the afternoon workable with children. Wear shoes you can stand in all day, bring sun cover, and save clothes you will not miss for J'ouvert.
