A lion and dragon dance traditionally opens the one stage at the Tampa Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Festival, and after that it barely pauses. For one spring afternoon at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park on the downtown riverfront, the stage rotates through Tampa's Asian and Pacific Islander communities: Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Bangladeshi, Korean, Japanese and Hawaiian groups have all performed, with classical dance, folk song, bamboo ensembles and martial arts demonstrations. Vendors cook on grills lined with skewers, and a marketplace sells ceramics and handmade goods. The Mayor's Asian American Pacific Islander Advisory Council organizes the festival, and community organizations staff information booths. The city's page posts each year's start and end times for the free festival, which runs from midday into the evening. The dragon dance and the flag presentation both come in the first half hour, around the opening remarks near noon.
