About this happenin

Every spring, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park fills with dragon dancers, bamboo ensembles and grill smoke as Tampa's Asian and Pacific Islander communities take over the downtown riverfront for an afternoon. The day is built around one stage that runs almost without a gap, and a lion and dragon dance traditionally opens it. What follows rotates through the region's communities: Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Bangladeshi, Korean, Japanese and Hawaiian groups have all taken the stage, with classical dance, folk song and martial arts demonstrations. Around the stage, vendors work grills lined with skewers, a marketplace sells ceramics and handmade goods, and community organizations staff information booths. Know before you go: admission is free, and the festival runs from midday into the evening, so check the city's page for that year's start and end times. The flag presentation, dragon dance and opening remarks all land in the first half hour, so arrive near noon if those are what you came for. It is organized by the Mayor's Asian American Pacific Islander Advisory Council and planned with families in mind.
