About this happenin

One of the nation's largest and longest running MLK Day parades fills 1st Avenue South in downtown St. Petersburg with HBCU marching bands and floats. Tampa Bay Collard Green Festival Inc. produces it with the City of St. Petersburg, and the band roster is the draw: Florida A&M's Marching 100, Tuskegee and Alabama A&M have all worked the route. It covers about a mile and a half, heading west from 3rd Street South, and the downtown blocks fill first. Know before you go: watching is free and no ticket is needed. Step off is 11 a.m. sharp and the parade runs to roughly 2 p.m., with street closures beginning around 8 a.m. The city typically opens free parking at Tropicana Field near the west end, and downtown garages are listed at stpete.org/parking. SunRunner and PSTA service reroutes around the closures, so check your station first. The route is accessible, with designated viewing areas for people with disabilities. Bring a folding chair.
