Plant City Pig Jam is a Kansas City Barbeque Society state championship cook-off, which means the smoke drifting over the Randy Larson Softball Four-plex every November comes from teams chasing real points in brisket, ribs, pork and chicken. Amateur and professional divisions compete across the two days, and the way you eat is to swap cash for Pig Bucks, the festival currency, then spend them at the competitors' own trailers. Money from those plates funds scholarships for local high school seniors, which is why the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce has kept it going for more than two decades. Know before you go: admission is $5 per person, and kids 6 and under get in free. Parking is free, with attendants directing cars to a spot, though handicap spaces are limited. Friday is an evening session and Saturday runs from late morning into the evening. Kids get a rock climbing wall and moonwalks. Leave pets at home, since only service animals are allowed.
