Maifest at the German-American Society
8098 66th St N, Pinellas Park, FL 33781
About this happenin
The Maibaum stands year-round in the biergarten at the German-American Society, blue and white under its wreath, and one Saturday each May a festival forms around it. The Gulf Coast Enzianer Schuhplattler dancers circle the pole and braid ribbons into a woven pattern, then unwind them back out, which is the reason to be in the biergarten by late afternoon. Around that: a band working through polka and waltz sets, Maibock poured into steins at the bar, bratwurst and giant pickles off the grill, pretzels, sauerkraut and potato salad, plus a vendor village of German bakers and stein sellers. Know before you go: the gate opens at noon and the day ends at 7 p.m., with recent admission at $8, or $5 for members. Parking is free but the lot fills early, overflow goes to the medical complex at 66th Street North and 78th Avenue North, and PSTA Route 66 stops in front. The Main Hall and Bierstube stay air conditioned.
