About this happenin
Each November the Hillsborough County Fair fills the Dover fairgrounds with 4-H and FFA livestock barns, a carnival midway and rodeo staged by Tampa Rodeo. Run by the Greater Hillsborough County Fair Association, it is the county's own agricultural fair, a smaller and more rural affair than the Florida State Fair in February. Youth exhibitors show beef and dairy cattle, swine, sheep, boer and dairy goats, poultry and rabbits, and the market animal sale is the week's real business. Around the barns sit a Dreamland Amusements midway, an entertainment pavilion, the Harvest Queen scholarship pageant, and contests running from spelling bee and photography to hay bale decorating and whip cracking. Know before you go: parking is free. Gates open at 5 pm on weeknights and at noon on Saturdays, Sundays and Veterans Day, closing between 9 and 10 pm, with the carnival running an hour past the gates. Advance discounted gate admission is sold online before opening day. No pets beyond documented service dogs.
