The village of Folkstone rises in the Dade City pines for seven winter weekends, and its knights joust full-contact in armor. The grounds hold 100 artisans and 15 stages of entertainment, where musicians and jugglers perform between jousts. Each weekend carries its own theme, so the bill shifts as the run goes on. The Bay Area Renaissance Festival got its start in Largo and has been a Tampa Bay habit for decades. These days it sets up on grounds just off US 301, northeast of the city. Gates are open 10am to 6pm Saturdays and Sundays, rain or shine, with no refunds for weather. Buying ahead beats the gate price (children 4 and under are free). Parking costs nothing, and attendants will point you where to go. Strollers are fine, and dogs can come on a leash under the festival's posted rules. Outside food and drink stay in the car, except for one unopened 20-ounce water bottle per person, and bags are checked at the entrance.
