West Indian American Day Carnival and Parade
Eastern Parkway and Utica Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11213
About this happenin
Labor Day Monday on Eastern Parkway belongs to the West Indian American Day Carnival, a parade of Caribbean costume bands through Crown Heights. The West Indian American Day Carnival Association runs it and calls it the largest Caribbean carnival in North America. Carnival began in Harlem ballrooms in the 1930s and has been on Eastern Parkway since the late 1960s, with the bands moving from Utica Avenue toward Grand Army Plaza. The morning starts at dawn with J'Ouvert, a separate procession through Crown Heights that has its own organisers. Carnival Week fills the days before the parade. The New York Panorama, which the association calls the largest steel pan competition in North America, is part of that week, and so is a Junior Carnival of children's bands that parades to the Brooklyn Museum.
