CommunityNathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest
1310 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11224
About this happenin
Competitors get ten minutes to eat as many hot dogs and buns as they can on a stage outside the original Nathan's Famous, at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, every Fourth of July. A pre-show of live music and variety acts starts the morning. The women's championship goes first in the late morning and the men's follows in the early afternoon, with the Mustard Yellow Belt going to the men's winner. Major League Eating, which sanctions the contest, dates it to 1916, the year Nathan's opened on Surf Avenue. Police once put the crowd at close to 50,000. Watching from the street is free, and ESPN carries both contests live if you'd rather stay home.
