Giglio Feast (Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel)
275 North 8th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211
About this happenin
For 12 days every July, the streets around the Shrine Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 275 North 8th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, become a street festival. The centerpiece is the Dancing of the Giglio, a tower more than 70 feet tall, decorated with flowers and saints, carried through the streets by over one hundred men. A symbolic boat is lifted too, for San Paolino's return to Nola. Immigrants from Nola settled the neighborhood, and the Società M.S. San Paolino held the first Giglio feast in Brooklyn in 1903. The parish took it over in the 1950s and folded in its own Mount Carmel feast. Food vendors, rides, games and nightly entertainment fill the blocks, and an indoor cafe and casino give some relief from the heat. It all builds to July 16, the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
