About this happenin
The first SummerStage show was in June 1986, when the Sun Ra Arkestra played the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park. City Parks Foundation now runs the series from Rumsey Playfield, on the Fifth Avenue side of the park near 69th Street, and takes it out to a dozen or more neighborhood parks across the five boroughs, Flushing Meadows Corona Park among them. A season runs to more than 60 shows. The bill covers jazz, hip-hop, Latin and global music, indie bands and contemporary dance. Most shows are free. Some benefit nights are ticketed, and the money helps pay for the Foundation's free programs in parks. If a favorite act is on the schedule, check which kind of night it is before you go.
