Charlie Parker Jazz Festival
Marcus Garvey Park, Madison Avenue at East 124th Street, New York, NY 10035
About this happenin
Two parks share the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival for one weekend in late August: Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem and Tompkins Square Park in the East Village. Those are the neighborhoods where Parker worked and lived. It is free. City Parks Foundation produces it as part of SummerStage, and it runs three days. Sam Turvey founded the festival, which dates to 1993. The bills pair veterans with the next generation of jazz musicians, chosen to reflect Parker's musical individuality. Sets are split between the two parks, so check which one you want before heading uptown or down.
