New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks
Great Lawn, Central Park, New York, NY 10024
About this happenin
Bring a blanket. Since 1965 the New York Philharmonic has played free concerts on the lawns of city parks for about a week each June, including a night on the Great Lawn in Central Park. The orchestra also plays the Parade Ground in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, the Long Meadow Ballfields in Prospect Park in Brooklyn and the 193rd Street Field in Cunningham Park in Queens. A free indoor concert at the St. George Theatre on Staten Island has closed out the week. No tickets are needed outdoors, and lawn spots are first come, first served. Low beach chairs are allowed but standard lawn chairs are not. You can bring food but not alcohol, and there are no food trucks. Each outdoor concert runs about two hours with an intermission and ends in fireworks, rain or shine. On some evenings youth ensembles from community partners play from 6 to 7:30 p.m. while people arrive. The Staten Island concert needs a free ticket, four per person at most.
More in June: 14 other New York events.
