Summer Streets
Park Avenue and Lafayette Street, from the Brooklyn Bridge to East 110th Street, New York, NY
About this happenin
On a few Saturdays each August, cars lose Park Avenue. Summer Streets opens Lafayette Street and Park Avenue, from the Brooklyn Bridge north to East 110th Street, to people on foot and on bikes from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and some years the route carries on uptown to Dyckman Street. The city's transportation department runs it rain or shine, and the programming is free. Most of it happens at rest stops along the way: lawn games on Grand Central's Great Lawn at East 40th Street, DJs, art from DOT Art, yoga, rollerblading lessons and quick bike checks. Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx each get a Saturday on a route of their own, such as Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn or the Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
