Japan Day Inc. sends its parade south down Central Park West each May, from West 81st Street to West 67th Street, while a street fair fills West 72nd Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. The nonprofit is run by a board drawn from leading Japanese companies in New York. Those companies started it in 2007 as Japan Day @ Central Park, at the request of Japan's consul general, and held it every May through 2019. The pandemic cancelled 2020 and moved 2021 online, and in 2022 it came back as a parade and a fair. The parade goes ahead in the rain unless the weather turns dangerous. Marching groups apply and are accepted in advance, and children and strollers can march with them. Marchers may not advertise or cosplay a specific anime or manga character.
