Queens Pride Parade and Festival
37th Road & 75th Street, Jackson Heights, NY 11372
About this happenin
On the first Sunday in June, the Queens Pride Parade comes along 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights, and a multicultural festival follows at 37th Road and 75th Street. It started in 1993, after the murder of Jackson Heights resident Julio Rivera and a fight over the Children of the Rainbow school curriculum. Daniel Dromm, then a public school teacher in the district where the curriculum row was centered, came out and organized a family-friendly march in a neighborhood where many closeted people lived. About 10,000 people came to the first one, and 37th Avenue was painted with a lavender line. It is now the second oldest pride march in the city, produced by the NY LGBT Network. The festival runs from noon to 6 pm, with a stage for live entertainment. Groups and individuals can register to march.
