Since 1993, galleries that deal in self-taught art and art brut have gathered once a year in New York for the Outsider Art Fair, now held over a long weekend at the Metropolitan Pavilion on West 18th Street. The idea goes back to the French artist Jean Dubuffet, who described art brut in a 1947 manifesto as work by people untouched by artistic culture. The fair pushes back on the notion that the work is essentially pathological. What the artists share, it says, is that art history and art-world trends never shaped them. The pavilion is ADA accessible, and the fair will set aside a wheelchair if you email ahead.
