There are no floats in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade. The 69th Regiment leads it up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 79th, and Irish societies, the 32 county societies, schools and colleges follow. It steps off at 11 a.m. on March 17 and runs until about 4:30. When the 17th is a Sunday, the parade moves to the Saturday before. The first one marched in 1762, fourteen years before the Declaration of Independence. The route still passes St. Patrick's Cathedral, where the Archbishop of New York reviews it from the steps. Spectators can line the avenue as early as they like, and the organizer warns that there are no portable restrooms along the way.
