About this happenin

On Columbus Day, the National Columbus Day Parade travels up Fifth Avenue from 47th Street to 72nd Street with floats and marching bands, led each year by a Grand Marshal of Italian heritage. The Columbus Citizens Foundation produces it and describes it as the world's largest celebration of Italian American heritage and culture. The parade falls on the second Monday of October. New York City marks that Monday as both Italian Heritage Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day, and government offices and public schools are closed. The same weekend, the foundation holds a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral and lays a wreath at Columbus Circle.

More in October: 12 other New York events.
