Greek Independence Day Parade
Fifth Avenue and East 64th Street, New York, NY 10065
About this happenin
On a Sunday each spring, the Greek Independence Day Parade comes up Fifth Avenue from 64th Street to 79th Street, and the sidewalks along Central Park fill with blue and white flags. It marks March 25, 1821, when the Greek Revolution against Ottoman rule began. The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York has organized it for more than 85 years. Evzones of the Presidential Guard march in red caps and white pleated kilts. The grand marshals and the Federation's member societies follow, and thousands of people line the barricades to watch for free. Recent parades have stepped off at 1:30 p.m. The weekend around it has also brought a flag raising at Bowling Green and a gala.
