New York City Veterans Day Parade
Fifth Avenue at East 26th Street, New York, NY 10010
About this happenin
Every November 11, veterans march north on Fifth Avenue from 26th Street in what the United War Veterans Council says is the largest Veterans Day parade in the country. Its own count runs past 280 marching units and 20,000 marchers, with more than 25 floats and 150 vehicles. Military families and community groups march alongside them, and a new Grand Marshal is named each year. The parade nearly died out. A group of Vietnam veterans revived the council in 1985 to save it, and the council traces its roots to groups founded by Spanish-American War veterans in 1898. The morning has opened with a wreath-laying at the Eternal Light Flagstaff in Madison Square Park before the step-off. Groups can apply through the council to march, and it takes volunteers for the day.
