NYC Rathayatra (Festival of Chariots)
Washington Square Park, Fifth Avenue and Waverly Place, New York, NY 10003
About this happenin
NYC Rathayatra is the Hare Krishna Festival of Chariots, a Saturday procession down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan that ends at a festival in Washington Square Park. Devotees pull the chariots of Lord Jagannath along the avenue chanting, and ISKCON New York City, the Brooklyn temple that runs it, has counted more than 20,000 people in a single year. The park has kirtan and a stage program, with stalls selling treats and books. Organisers hand out a full plate of free prasadam, the vegetarian food offered to the deity, and have served close to 15,000 plates. A Friday kirtan at Tompkins Square Park opens the weekend and the temple on Schermerhorn Street holds an open house on Sunday. Volunteers staff the booths, and the temple says no experience is needed to sign up.
