National Puerto Rican Day Parade
Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street, New York, NY 10022
About this happenin
The National Puerto Rican Day Parade fills 35 blocks of Fifth Avenue, from 44th Street to 79th, on the second Sunday of June. Its organizers call it the largest demonstration of cultural pride in the country and expect a million or more marchers and spectators. You can't simply join in. Every marcher has to belong to a registered contingent, because the NYPD requires the organizers to be able to identify everyone in the line. The parade's founders first marched in New York in 1958. In the run-up each year the organizers also hold a Mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral and the 152nd Street Cultural Festival, and the parade's scholarship program gives $2,000 each to 100 students of Puerto Rican descent every year.
More in June: 14 other New York events.
