For a Saturday and Sunday in May, fifteen blocks of Ninth Avenue in Hell's Kitchen, 42nd to 57th Street, turn into one long street food fair, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The Ninth Avenue Association, the avenue's merchants' group, runs it and calls it the oldest and largest continuing food festival in New York City. The restaurants on the route take part alongside vendors working grills and griddles in the street. Past merchant lists have covered Greek pastries, Brazilian grilled meats, tikka masala and curries, empanadas and Portuguese paella. Merchandise sellers and entertainers fill the blocks between the food. Walking it costs nothing. It goes ahead rain or shine.
