About this happenin
Printed Matter started the New York Art Book Fair in 2006 and calls it the largest international gathering for the distribution of artists' books. Printed Matter itself is a nonprofit, founded by artists and art workers in 1976. The fair runs four days and has changed venues over the years. Recent editions have been at MoMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City, where it also spent the decade before the pandemic. Each of those fairs had more than 250 exhibitors, small presses and self-publishing artists beside rare book dealers and institutions. Thursday night is a ticketed opening, and the public days that follow through Sunday are ticketed too. Capacity is limited, so Printed Matter asks people to register ahead, and it says no one is turned away for lack of funds. Between the tables there are talks in a series called The Classroom, and there is music and poetry on a stage in the courtyard.
More in September: 8 other New York events.
