National Dominican Day Parade
Sixth Avenue, from West 37th Street to West 55th Street, New York, NY 10036
About this happenin
On a Sunday in August, Sixth Avenue fills with Dominican flags from 37th Street up to 55th Street. The National Dominican Day Parade steps off at 11 a.m. and more than 10,000 people march in it, with the whole thing built around music and dance. Dominican Day Parade, Inc., a nonprofit, has organized it for more than four decades. Every parade has its own theme and a grand marshal. Honorees from the Dominican community ride on floats or in convertibles, and the organizer also raises money for scholarships for students of Dominican descent. Groups form up on 36th, 37th and 38th Streets before the start. Nobody marches without a wristband and a place in a registered, approved contingent, so for most people this is a parade to watch from the sidewalk.
