About this happenin
Mer-folk and fantastical sea creatures take over Surf Avenue and the Boardwalk at Coney Island for the Mermaid Parade, on a Saturday in June. Coney Island USA, the nonprofit arts group behind it, started it in 1983 and calls it the nation's largest art parade. A crowned King Neptune and Queen Mermaid lead the way, with marching bands and mechanized floats behind them. The route has started at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue and broken up at Steeplechase Plaza under the Parachute Jump. It goes ahead rain or shine. Streets close around 10 am. Later in the afternoon a procession walks down to the beach, where a ceremony opens the ocean for the summer swimming season. Marchers can sign up on the day: registration has opened at 10 am and takes cash only.
More in June: 14 other New York events.
