About this happenin
Make Music New York puts more than 1,000 free concerts in parks and on sidewalks across all five boroughs every June 21, the summer solstice. It has run since 2007, from ten in the morning to ten at night, and anyone who wants to play can take part. Amateurs set up next to professionals, often in front of the biggest crowds they have had, and listeners are invited to sing or play along. The festival runs its own projects too. Mass Appeal concerts gather dozens of players on one piece written for a single instrument, and Punk Island and the Porch Stomp folk festival are regulars. The idea comes from France's Fête de la Musique, which began in 1982. The same nonprofit puts on Make Music Winter, a set of participatory musical parades on December 21.
More in June: 14 other New York events.
