MusicJazz Age Lawn Party
Governors Island, New York, NY 10004
About this happenin
Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra started the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island in 2005 as a small gathering. It now draws thousands of people dressed as flappers and sporting gents for a weekend of 1920s hot jazz. The orchestra plays for a dance floor set under the trees, with lessons and contests in the Charleston on Saturday and the Peabody on Sunday. Between dances people picnic on the lawn, play croquet and pétanque, sit for a tintype portrait or shop the vintage clothing vendors. Sunday adds the High Court of Pie baking contest and a children's parade for kids 12 and under, and Kidland has carnival games and crafts. Gates are open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. You reach the island by ferry from the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan or from Pier 6 in Brooklyn. Tickets have sold out in past years.
More in June: 14 other New York events.
