About this happenin
For 11 days each September the Feast of San Gennaro takes over Mulberry Street in Little Italy, from Canal Street up to Houston. It also spreads onto Hester Street between Baxter and Centre, and Grand Street between Baxter and Centre Market Place, 11 blocks in all. The Neapolitans who settled on Mulberry Street started it in 1926 as a one-day block party for the patron saint of Naples. San Gennaro was Bishop of Benevento and was martyred in 305 AD. September 19, the anniversary of his martyrdom, is one of the two days a year his blood is said to liquefy in Naples. The organizers, Figli di San Gennaro, use the feast to raise money for more than 30 charities and organizations.
