India Day Parade
Madison Avenue at East 38th Street, New York, NY 10016
About this happenin
Each August, close to India's Independence Day on August 15, the India Day Parade heads south down Madison Avenue from the low 40s toward Madison Square Park. More than 40 floats roll with dance troupes and community groups, and Bollywood stars and cricket greats have ridden in it over the years. The Federation of Indian Associations, a nonprofit founded in 1970 that serves Indian Americans across eight Northeast states, has produced it for more than four decades and calls it the largest India Day parade in the world. The route ends by Madison Square Park, where more than 45 booths and food courts serve Indian food and show off sponsors' products. In the evening a stage program of Indian dance follows, with Indian American children among the performers.
